    North East Congo Lion (Panthera leo azandica)

    The North East Congo lion also known as Uganda lion is an endangered sub-species. They are found in the Congo River basin, the Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of the Congo and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, Kidepo Valley and Murchison Falls National Park in Central African Republic, in Rwanda Akagera National Park and in the south of Sudan.

    Kalahari lion (Panthera leo melanochaita)

    Kalahari lion is found in the Cetral Kalahari region in Botswana. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the Kalahari Desert is the best place to see the Kalahari lions.

    White Lion (Panthera leo)

    White lion is the Southern African lion. They are found in South Africa’s Timbavati region and other parts of South Africa such as Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in Western Cape and Pumba Private Game Reserve and Kruger National Park, Papanack Park Zoo in Wendover, Ontario, European Union of Zoos and Aquaria, Toronto Zoo in Canada, Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio, Kingdom of Zion sanctuary in New Zealand.

    Ethiopian Lion

    Ethiopian Lions are found in a national park in Etiopia. They are found in Alatash National Park and Dinder National Park. According a report, up to 200 lions has been found in Ethiopia, of which 27 to 54 are in Alatash National Park.

    Katanga Lion (Panthera leo bleyenberghi)

    That Katanga lion, or Southwest African lion is found in Angola, Namibia, western Zimbabwe and Zambia, Zaire and northern Botswana in Southwest Africa.

    Masai Lion (Panthera leo nubica)

    The Masai lion, or East African lion, lives in East African countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique.

    Transvaal Lion (Panthera leo krugeri)

    Transvaal lions or southeastern African lions live in southern parts of Africa such as the Krueger National Park. They are also found in Kalahari, southern Namibia, South-east Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

    Senegal Lion (Panthera leo senegalensis)

    Senegal Lionor West African lion can be found only in Niokolo-Koba in Senegal or in Benin and Cameroon.


    The main threats to the lions are habitat destruction, human-lions conflict, poaching, hunting etc. Currently there are more captive lions then wild lions. If emergency measures are not taken, there will be no lion left on Earth
