    Essay on Owl: Owl is a nocturnal, medium-sized raptor. More than 200 species of owls are found on the earth. Some species of owls are Great Horned Owls, Barn Owls, Snowy Owls, etc. Owls are in different colors like grey, brown, black, white etc. Owls are found in rainforests, woodlands, desert region, grassland as well as cold tundra region. As they are unable to move their big rounded eyes, owls can rotate their necks about 270 ° in both directions. Compared to males, female owls are larger and more aggressive. In Western culture, the owl is considered a symbol of wisdom and awareness.

    Introduction

    Owl is a nocturnal birds of prey. More than 200 species of owls are found on the earth. These carnivorous birds are active at night but some species are active in day time such as northern hawk-owl and burrowing owl. Owls belong in two families- Strigidae and Tytonidae. According to Kenyans, it was a myth that seeing or hearing an owl is a sign of death.

    The Japanese believe that the owl is a symbol of good luck. In fWestern culture, the owl is considered a symbol of wisdom and awareness.

    Description and Behaviour of Owl

    Owl is a medium sized raptor with a broad rounded flat face, two big rounded eyes, and a sharp curved beak. The owl can grow about 14 to 72cm and their body is covered with comb-like feathers. The owls have two large eyes and have binocular vision. As their eyes are fixed in their eye sockets, they have to move their heads around 270 degrees to see the objects and it is possible for their 14 neck vertebrae. Owls cannot see clearly nearby because they are farsighted. Eagle owls, Blakiston's fish owl and the Eurasian eagle-owl are the largest species of owls while the elf owl, the long-whiskered owlet and the Tamaulipas pygmy owl are the smallest owl species on Earth. To communicate, different owl species make different sounds. Owls not only hoot but they also screech, growl, bark or hiss. Owl has two ears at the side of its large head and is covered with feathers. They have excellent hearing so they can easily detect the direction and location of the prey. Owls have the ability to fly without making any sound. Owls have curved and sharp claws which help them to catch and kill the prey. They have short, curved sharp beaks which are downward-facing. The dull coloration of the plumage helps them to camouflage so they hide themselves in the surroundings.

    Some species of owls are Great Horned Owls, Barn Owls, Snowy Owls, Long-Eared Owl and Screech Owls, Speckled Owl, Oriental Bay Owl etc.

    Since there are over 200 owl species, their breeding seasons have varied. Owls make their nests in the hollows in the trees, in empty buildings, and cliffs. Some species like Snowy Owls and Short-eared Owls make their nests on the ground by digging burrows. Most female owls lay 2 to 5 eggs in the spring season but some species lay 12 to 13 eggs which are spherical in shape and white in color. Both male and female protect their nest. The baby owls are called owlets and "Parliament" is the name of the owl group.

    Owls are carnivorous raptors and their main diet is small rodents, insects, snails, slugs, reptiles, small mammals, fish or birds but their diet depends on their species, habitat and season. 

    When the Owl catches its prey, it swiftly comes down on the prey and then brings its feet in front of face and spreads the talons in an oval shape and swiftly catches their prey. Owls do not have the ability to chew prey so they swallow it whole or tear the body of the prey into pieces to swallow. 

    Owls live in every continent but they do not live in

    Antarctica. These fascinating creatures are not human friendly and prefer to live in the wild. Different species live in different habitats that are dependent on temperature, feeding habits, and other variables.  Spotted owls live in large spruce trees, Northern Hawk owls prefer to live in open woodlands, Grey owls and Barred owls are found in hardwood forests. Frozen Tundra region is the home of Snowy Owls.

    Owls are the natural pest controllers of the environment. owls help to prevent crop damage by eating insects and rodents. They play an important role in maintaining the food chain or ecosystem by controlling the rodent populations. Owls also prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases by eating diseased rodents.
